A video call in the middle of Berlin Hauptbahnhof
It was about 9:15 p.m. when a video call came in from our surrogate’s husband whilst we were waiting for our night train to Stuttgart to say that they’d just begun the process. Up to that point, my husband and I were so tired after a really long day, having needed to rebook our train after the Austrian train company we had been booked with decided to cancel, and earlier we had spent over two hours waiting in the DBB customer service area to make alternative travel arrangements. That, plus the heat in Berlin, was unbearable, so when the call came in, we needed to turn our frowns upside down. The magic of what we were seeing and hearing the faint voices through our shared AirPods telling us what was happening made it uniquely special in the very public setting of the platform at Berlin Hauptbahnhof. It was over so quickly, we all said our goodbyes and for me the reality of it began to sink in. Finding our seats on the train we settled in to chat about our experience and then tried to get some sleep as the train pulled away from the station. We’d find out in a few weeks if the implantation had worked and it’ll hopefully be another step forward in our surrogacy journey.
