A core memory I hold is sitting in the front room at my parents’ house with my brothers and sister watching music videos for hours on MTV2, SCUZZ, and Kerrang. My love for music was shaped during the late 90s and early 2000s by Korn, Metallica, Green Day, and Deftones. However, one band hit the mainstream in August 2001, with the release of the first single from their album ‘Toxicity’, and that song was “Chop Suey!”. Last June, I finally experienced System of a Down live at Stade de France in Paris. It was the most uplifting experience I’ve ever had and arguably the best gig I’ve ever been to. Sharing it with my brother was incredible. We’ve been fans for years, and standing next to him while singing every song was exhilarating. Even remembering singing “Eating seeds as a pastime activity” from “Toxicity” at the top of my voice with over seventy thousand fans still gives me goosebumps and will for years to come.
